RENASCIMENTO EM DANÇA
Creative Retreat on Butoh and Body Weather
with Marlene Jöbstl, Sara Pons & Yael Karavan
at the magic forest of Quinta Ten Chi - Sintra - Portugal
RENASCIMENTO EM DANÇA (RED) is a 5-day immersive retreat that offers a multi-layered journey, inviting participants to deeply explore and experience Butoh.
Participants will live, eat, dance, and exist within a rich natural and communal environment.
On the first evening, Marlene, Sara, and Yael will present their work through a performance shared with the participants and open to the public.
From the following day, each day will include workshops led by the teachers, as well as time for digesting, reflecting, and creating your own performances.
Every participant will be guided and mentored by each of the teachers to discover their own dance and creative voice, which will be shared with a live audience on the final evening. This could take the form of a solo, duet, or larger group pieces.
Finally, we will have a closing session to reflect on the work developed throughout the retreat, allowing for a meaningful integration of the experience.
Each of the teachers brings her own unique approach to Butoh. While their methods differ, all draw from the same “essence”, together creating a multi-layered experience that spans the past, present, and future of this powerful art form.
-
Classical butoh rooted in the work of Japanese masters
-
Butoh Investigation through specific themes, from the personal journey to sharing it on stage.
-
Creative physical training with Body Weather:
MB (Mind-Body - Muscles-Bones) + Space-Time-Body and Play.
The workshops revolve around the themes of rebirth, birth, death, transformation, and resilience, inviting participants to explore these profound cycles through movement, imagery, and shared experience. Whether working indoors, outdoors, or with a site-specific approach, the beautiful natural surroundings enhance the process, allowing each dancer to connect deeply with their own transformation in harmony with nature.
In this sacred space, each teacher shares only the “joyas”—the best and most refined aspects of Butoh.
The intention is to invite not just learning, but true transformation,
as participants engage with the deepest layers of themselves and the dance.

‘In other forms of dance, such as flamenco or classical dance, the movements are derived from a fixed technique; they are imposed from the outside and are conventional in form. In my case, it's the contrary, my dance is far removed from conventions and techniques, it is the unveiling of the inner life."
Tatsumi Hijikata, founder of Ankoku Butoh.
